Biography
Guanhua Chen is Chair Professor in the Department of Chemistry at the University of Hong Kong. He received his BSc degree from Fudan University in 1986 and his PhD degree from the California Institute of Technology in 1992.
Professor Chen joined the University of Hong Kong in 1996 and has served as Assistant Professor, Associate Professor, and Professor in the Department of Chemistry. He was Head of the Department of Chemistry from 2010 to 2016 and Honorary Professor in the Department of Physics from 2014 to 2022. He is also Lead PI of the AIR@InnoHK Centre of Machine Learning on Energy Materials and Devices.
Professor Chen's research focuses on developing first-principles quantum mechanical methods to model materials and devices. His group develops first-principles methods for open quantum systems and employs machine learning to improve the accuracy of quantum mechanical methods for quantitatively precise prediction of material properties. He is a Fellow of the American Physical Society and the Royal Society of Chemistry, and has received the Outstanding Young Scholar Award of the National Natural Science Foundation of China, the National Natural Science Award (First Class) of the Ministry of Education of China, and the Outstanding Young Researcher Award of the University of Hong Kong.
