Biography
Professor Shuang Zhang is Chair Professor in the Departments of Physics and Electrical and Computer Engineering at The University of Hong Kong, a position he has held since 2020. Prior to joining HKU, he was Professor (2013-2020) and Reader (2010-2013) in the School of Physics & Astronomy at the University of Birmingham. Earlier in his career, he conducted postdoctoral research at the University of California, Berkeley (2006-2010) and the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign (2005-2006).
Professor Zhang received his PhD in Electrical Engineering from the University of New Mexico in 2005. He obtained an MSc in Physics from Northeastern University in 1999, and both his BSc and MSc degrees in Physics from Jilin University in 1996.
An internationally recognized physicist and optical scientist, Professor Zhang was elected a Fellow of the Optical Society of America (OSA) in 2016 in recognition of his outstanding contributions to optics and photonics. His pioneering research has been widely acknowledged through numerous prestigious honours and awards. He was named among the Global Highly Cited Researchers by the Web of Science Group (Clarivate Analytics) for three consecutive years (2018, 2019, and 2020 lists announced in 2019, 2020, and 2021, respectively), recognizing him as one of the world's most influential researchers. He received the Royal Society Wolfson Research Merit Award from The Royal Society, UK, in 2016 and was awarded the International Union of Pure and Applied Physics (IUPAP) Young Scientist Prize in Optics in 2010.
Professor Zhang's research spans optics, photonics, metamaterials, and nanophotonics, where he has made significant contributions to advancing fundamental science and enabling transformative technologies. Through his innovative research and international collaborations, he continues to play a leading role in shaping the future of optical and photonic sciences.
