Establishment of the Department of Materials and Energy

Established on 1 August 2026, the Department of Materials and Energy (MSE) at The University of Hong Kong (HKU) brings together leading expertise in materials, energy and advanced manufacturing to drive innovation, advance sustainability, and tackle global challenges through research and education.

Welcoming the launch, Professor David Srolovitz, Dean of HKU Engineering and Chair of Materials Theory, said: "MSE brings together expertise across disciplines to foster innovation, support sustainability, and accelerate the translation of research into real-world impact. The department has attracted a cohort of internationally renowned scholars whose expertise spans materials science, energy and sustainability technologies, nanotechnology, advanced manufacturing and bioelectronics. Its founding faculty members have an average H-index of nearly 160, further strengthening HKU's research excellence in materials and energy."

Professor Chunyi Zhi, Interim Head and Chair Professor of MSE, said: "The establishment of MSE reflects the growing importance of materials and energy technologies in shaping a sustainable and technologically advanced future. We are committed to nurturing the next generation of innovators while advancing discoveries that benefit society."

Built on the strategic research pillars, Energy Materials, AI for Materials, Advanced Manufacturing, and Semiconductor & Electronic Materials, MSE will initially focus on postgraduate education through TPg, MPhil and PhD programmes.

Looking ahead, MSE aims to attract global talent, strengthen industry partnerships, and contribute to the development of Hong Kong and the wider region as an international innovation and technology hub.
